Free Software Foundation launched a campain against Microsoft’s new Operating System Windows 7 and other proprietary software, website www.windows7sins.org with modified badvista image on the website. As we all know proprietary software is a threat to our future & to our children so it is high time to re-think about stanse on open-source vs proprietary.

Ubuntu 9.10 alpha 4 released

Ubuntu, a popular GNU/Linux distribution is gearing up for its next release Ubuntu 9.10 code named Karmic Koala. Ubuntu developers have released 4th alpha of Ubuntu 9.10.

Upgrading from older versions: If you want to test the new version, press Alt + F2 and type in “update-manager -d“. Update Manager should open up and tell you: New distribution release ‘9.10′ is available. Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.

Key Features: Some key features included in this alpha include,

  • Latest Gnome 2.27.4 development release
  • Empathy replaces Pidgin
  • Karmic images available on Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC) and Amazon’s EC2 cloud services.
  • GCC 4.4 as default compiler
  • ext4 by default
  • Linux Kernel 2.6.31-rc5

Linux Foundation launches branded credit card

The Linux Foundations is set to launch branded visa credit card featuring Tux mascot on it for people who contibute to operating system’s development. For every card the Linux Foundation gets $50 as well as some percentage from every transaction. CardParter teamed up with Linux Foundation to offer this card through UMB Bank.

Portable Apps Hits 100 Million Downloads

Portable apps have many advantages like mobility between operating systems with configurations, copy paste applications and more. Portable apps reached a major milestone by completing 100 million downloads. All of the 100 million portable apps served from PortableApps.com were of open source software. With no vendor lock-in, users are free to use the software anywhere, on the devices they want, the way they want.

Firefox exceeded billionth mark

Firefox, an open-source web browser, has created wonders by pulling down Microsoft’s IE market share by a noticable amount. Now it has crossed billion downloads in just 5 years that to without dominant Windows XP operating system support, on this eve mozilla has launched website http://www.onebillionplusyou.com/. Since Firefox launch in end 2004, it has captured nearing 30% of market share pulling down IE from 90%+ to around 60%.
