Whats special about Google mail (Gmail)?

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Every one who are familar with Internet own a mail-Id (one personal for sure), but which one? mostly gmail, Google trends say that only 2 countries use yahoo-mail more than google mail, so whats special about gmail?. As most of us know that gmail is a fantastic web application from search gaint Google, started on 1st April 2004 and took over conrtol from yahoo-mail (which dominated that time).

Some brilliant features available in gmail are,

1) Built in chat, text (sms), video, voice (Not fully functional in all parts of the world, but will be soon).

2) Spam filter is brilliant I can say.

3) GB’s of mails can be stored.

4) Mail search engine is excellent.

5) Undo sent mail within few seconds (Awesome feature) also delays you mail by few seconds (should not hurt you much).

6) Labels, Stars.

7) Gmail labs features: (Some I personally like)

  • Location is signature.
  • Undo send
  • Text messaging in chat
  • Create a document
  • Inbox preview
  • Mark as read button
  • Vacation Time
  • Navbar drag drop
  • Right side chat
  • Mouse gestures
  • Custom keyboard shortcuts
  • Quick links
  • Picassa privews in mail
  • youtube privews in mail
  • Offline

There are tons of lab features available, go to settings–>labs in gmail (If you own one) and try them.

Google Voice

Friday, July 17th, 2009

As most of us know Google is most popular internet search engine, but they are more than that, first gmail, then google apps, google books, google sms, and the list continues. Now they are out with Google Voice, so what is this Google Voice? how does this work? do I have a benefit? is it just another VoIP?  ?  ?  ?

First of all, one number for all your calls i.e, you have a unique Google number and call from any internet device (Smart Phones,, MIDs, Laptops, netbooks, etc), so life long only one number. Person receiving your call will get Google number. Isn’t that cool enough? I personally have changed 4 telecom carriers (4 different numbers). Google isn’t going to give you free of cost, yes you have to pay but not for all services also very economical they say (economical probably for people in US). Secondly, you can receive call on more than one device say office phone, cell phone (I don’t have any idea what happens if more than one devices are lifted together, probably a conference call). There are host number of features, here are a few goodies.

Call record –> Record your calls and store online.

Call switch –> Switch calls during a call.

Voice-mail transcripts –> Read what your voicemail says.

Phone routing –> Phone rings based on who calls.

Conference calls –> More than two on a call.

Only drawback as I can see is you are more exposed to deadly, unhealthy, unreal, lifeless Internet.
